Enzo Frateili and the Industrialization of the Construction Building

Abstract

Through the reading of the texts written by Frateili from 1957 to 1973 on the topic related to the industrialization of the construction building, the article highlights the context in which its theoretical reflection has matured: are highlighted the key elements of Frateili’s reflection and his critical contribution to the other central positions of the debate developed in Italy in the 1950s and 1960s. The essay deals with Frateili’s most important texts on the theme of building innovation since 1957 on Style, on Notiziario tecnico, and above all the essay Il modulo of 1957 published on La casa. Quaderni di architettura e critica, and culminating in the text Una autodisciplina per l’architettura considering the moment of major synthesis. The essence of the essay is also to identify the actual elements of Frateili’s thinking in relation to the current reality of the industry.

Author Biography

Andrea Campioli, Politecnico di Milano

He is a Full Professor of Architecture Technology at the Dipartimento di Architettura, Ingegneria delle Costruzioni at the Politecnico di Milano. He carries out research on the effects of technical and technological innovation on the design of architecture, with particular reference to the processes aimed at the objective of environmental sustainability in the life cycle of building products. He is responsible for research in private and public finance on these issues and is the author of many essays and articles. He collaborates with the Costruire in laterizio magazine, for which he curated the Dettagli (Details) column and is a member of the Scientific Committee, and Costruzioni metalliche, for which he is part of the Management Committee for the Architettura (Architecture) section.
