Abstract

We inaugurate with this issue of AIS/Design. Storia e ricerche a Documents section, which ideally welcomes proposals for re-reading writings that are relevant to the theme or significant testimonies introduced by a critical framing text.
Raimondo di Strassoldo's text Il pensiero ecologico: cenni storici (lit.Ecological Thought: Historical Overview) appeared in 1993 as an introduction to his book Le radici dell'erba. Sociologia dei movimenti ambientali di base (Lit. The Roots of Grass. Sociology of the basics ambiental movements. Naples: Liguori editore).
Raimondo di Strassoldo (1942) was full professor of Urban and Rural Sociology at the University of Palermo and of Sociology of Art at the University of Udine, where he directed the Department of Economics, Society and Territory from 1995 to 2001. He was chairman of the Research Committee on Social Ecology of the International Association of Sociology and is the author of numerous publications on environmental issues.
In this introduction, which is accompanied by a comprehensive and very useful bibliography, di Strassoldo deals with the genesis of ecological thought from a historical perspective. He also uses this historical approach in the following chapters, which illustrate the sociology of the new movements of the 1960s and the origins of the environmental movement and its evolution in the 1970s and 1980s, alternating sociological reflection and historical writing.
