From Kids’ Magazines to Graphic Advertising

Illustrators for Children’s Publishing, Young Graphic Design Masters of a Nascent State

Abstract

This paper highlights the pioneering role of publishing for children. Analyzing the case study of the «Giornalino della domenica» – a children’s magazine published in Italy in the first decades of the twentieth century – this essay discusses the role this sort of publications played in the education of taste, in the building of public opinion and in the formation of young artists who on the pages of magazines like these will gain the visibility that will allow them to work in advertising and to write important pages in the history of Italian graphic design.

Author Biography

Enrico Cicalò, Università degli Studi di Sassari

He is a researcher at the Department of Architecture, Design and Urban Planning of the University of Sassari where he teaches in the courses of Architecture and Design. Starting from the theories and experiences of graphic design, illustration and visual communication, his research activity focuses on the relationships between the transformation of aesthetic sensitivity, the evolution of graphic language and the construction of mental images. His research profile is multifaceted but always oriented towards the investigation of the relationship between project and image. Moving across the various areas of design, his studies focus on the role of design and images in the construction processes of the public sphere and public opinion.
