Abstract

From 11 to 14 April 1976 was held at the Royal College of Art and the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London the conference Design for Need. The Social Contribution of Design, organized by ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) in concert with other British and international organizations. The following year, a selection of 24 contributions was published by Pergamon Press, of the 52 presented during the conference, edited by Julian Bicknell and Liz McQuiston. In this issue of the AIS/Design Journal, we publish the introduction by Christopher Cornford, organizer of the conference.

Author Biography

Christopher Cornford, Royal College of Art, London

Christopher Francis Cornford (1971-1993) was an artist and professor at several British universities, including the University of Durham, Cambridge University School of Architecture and the Royal College of Art in London. He has published articles in the British Journal of Aesthetics, Design Magazine, Times Literary and Educational Supplements, among others. Member of the Communist Party in the 1930s, he continued his political activity until the late 1980s. Among the promoters of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, he was ones of the first members of the Ecology (later Green) party in the UK.
